The latest industry data reveals a significant uptick in global air cargo demand during the second quarter of 2026. Total freight tonne-kilometers (FTKs) increased by 8.3% compared to the same period last year, marking the strongest quarterly growth since early 2024.
Key drivers behind this surge include the continued expansion of cross-border e-commerce, particularly on Asia-Europe and transpacific lanes, along with a recovery in automotive and semiconductor manufacturing that has boosted demand for time-sensitive component shipments.
Capacity remains tight on several key trade lanes, with load factors averaging 67% globally. Airlines have responded by increasing freighter frequencies and deploying larger aircraft on high-demand routes. Spot rates on the Shanghai-Europe corridor have risen approximately 12% quarter-over-quarter.
Looking ahead, industry analysts expect demand to remain robust through the second half of 2026, supported by peak season inventory builds and ongoing supply chain diversification trends.
